Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Praying in litany form has long been a tradition in the Catholic Church with it’s roots in the Jewish Faith.  Psalm 35, for example, shares the same call and response format that is found in the litany.  The Litany of the Sacred Heart explores the many facets of the love of Jesus expressed in the language of his heart.  Each line draws us deeper into the mystery of Our Lord’s love for us.

With it’s roots in the 17th century, this version of the litany was approved in 1899 by Pope Leo XIII.

In private devotion, this litany is read or spoke aloud quietly.
In public prayer, the leader reads, or sings, the first line and all respond with “Have mercy on us.”

R. Touch our hearts and make them like your own.
Let us pray.
Father, we rejoice in the gifts of love
